Shira is the route taken by people intending to spend a slightly longer time on the mountain. The route approaches across the little visited Shira Plateau and meets up with the Machame route on day two, from where the two routes run in together around the Southern slopes to Barranco Camp and on to Barafu Camp for the summit attempt. This route is wearing over the course of 6 or 7 days and is for the fitter climber.
Accommodation on the mountain is in tents (even on descent) which the porters will pitch for you. You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes and walking poles. This is a steep, tough trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. This route is not recommended for walking as it simply follows a road.
